AirBnB and other vacational rental apps are extremely popular with younger generations due to the very low cost options. Instead of being put into a seemingly secluded hotel, you may put yourself in a spare bedroom, apartment or house that's right next to where you want to visit. If you rent by the month, the prices are slashed dramatically.
Couch Surfing
Sites like CouchSurfing or Interpals may be used to find free places to stay while abroad. Of course, think about it as networking with people in other countries and the free accomodation will come later. Hosts will often expect you to socialize with them and you will often be responsible for your own food or transportation. It isn't a sure-fire way of getting a place to stay but it's worth the try.
Classified Ads
There are lots of people around the world that are willing to rent out their homes or spare rooms to people needing short-term accomodation. As not everybody likes to be an AirBnB host, you may instead connect with them directly through places like Craigslist or Gumtree. There are also local variants of classefied ads if you are traveling internationally.
